Diaphragm of Elephant

It was the viva of Vety anatomy, Paper 2 practical examination. Dr. Kabita Sharmah mam(Prof. & head of the dept. of Vety anatomy,Cvsc, Khanapara, Ghy ) was taking us viva. Just at the end of the viva , Dr. K. K Sharmah sir was entered in the viva room.Dr. K. K Sharmah sir is the Prof. & head of the dept. of Vety Surgery and Radiology,Cvsc, Khanapara, Ghy. He was also awarded  as 'Elephant man of Asia'. His lifelong mission is the wellbeing of Asian elephant, individually or as a species .

When mam completed the viva , sir started to asked us different questions to know about our knowledge on Vety science. At first he asked why we select the Vety profession. Then he asked different questions from our course. He asked me a question about the presence of diaphragm in elephant and also about the shape of the diaphragm. I said ,'Elephant has a diaphragm and it is dome shaped'. Then sir asked, 'Are you sure'. I actually answered by relating with the cattle. I wasn't cleared on my answer. Then sir said us ,' You can't remembered all the things of anatomy till fourth year,  but if you can retain some ideas about bones, joint, arteries, veins, internal organs and their locations , you can able to handle any surgical problems '.

After the viva,  I tried to know about the respiratory system of elephant.  I found that the respiratory system of elephant is quite exceptional in number of ways. The elephant lacks a pleural cavity. This means the lungs are directly attached to the walls of chest cavity and to the diaphragm. Thus respiratory movement are solely dependent on chest musculature,  since there is no mechanism of inflating the lungs by negative pressure in the pleural cavity as in usual in mammals.
